About Nokuphila
Unabantu Nokuphila, or the Ubuntu Tree, is rooted in the courtyard of the Ubuntu Wellness Centre, in Kloof Street, Cape Town, South Africa

Unabantu: where the people come together.
Nokuphila: the mother of health.
Unabantu Nokuphila: Place of the Healing Mother where the people gather for health and wellness.

Named in Xhosa for its healing, nurturing properties, Unabantu Nokuphila – also known as the Ubuntu Tree – is an ancient wild fig tree that lies behind the Ubuntu Wellness Centre in Cape Town’s Kloof Street. It stands in the shadow of Table Mountain’s granite walls, and at the base of Lion’s Head.

For well over 400 years, this magical tree, renowned as far away as Maasailand for its medicial and spiritual qualities and in India as a Bodhi tree family member, has drawn its nutrients from the Camissa River, the oldest sweet water river in Cape Town.

The Ubuntu Tree has become a place for people from far and wide to gather and meet, to meditate and contemplate, and to heal. The tree is the guardian of love, compassion and motherly nurturing.
